    • Capital: Accra

  • Medical Device Market :

    • Government and ministry of health institutions provide the medical services. There is a slow progress of private institutions currently operating in the country including Christian missions. Advanced medical services are limited in big cities like Tamale, Accra, Tema, Takoradi, Sekondi….
    • The government is undertaking major reforms including the birth of a National Insurance scheme for most prevalent diseases to improve the healthcare system. The country enjoys stable economic and legal systems and this has encouraged foreign investment. The government has also increased its healthcare expenditure to reach 3.7 per cent of GDP (UN/World Bank).
    • European Standards are widely used in Ghana. The country is opened to foreign investment and to Western medical/Pharma companies to develop the healthcare market in the country.
    • Like Nigeria, Ghana is an attractive market for investment to Western companies. American and European medical & pharma products have a distinct advantage. However, we see a fast-growing presence, as in other African countries, of Chinese and Indian products with more affordable prices.
    • Ghana relies fully on importing medical devices. The pharmaceutical sector however consists of almost 70% of the cost of the healthcare. Most drugs are also imported. Local production is limited to Antibiotics, Vitamins, painkillers and Anti-infective.
    • Child and maternal health are still the most challenging diseases the country is facing. In 2007-2011, Ghana had a reported maternal mortality ratio of 450 deaths per 100,000 live births (UN agency/World Bank).
